MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team is set to travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., on March 9, to compete against Duquesne at noon.
“In the time we’ve had off, we’ve seen some really good changes,” says coach Tina Samara. “I truly believe we could see those significant changes in our results and surprise a lot of people.”
WVU currently holds an overall record of 2-7 and is 1-2 in the BIG EAST, after falling to Syracuse on Feb. 26. Duquesne has a similar record of 3-6, while going 1-1 in the BIG EAST.
“It has nothing to do with who we’re playing, it has to do with what we’re doing as a team,” adds Samara. “The last thing I worry about is a record, because it’s not our biggest obstacle. It’s about what team is going to show up.”
The Mountaineers defeated the Dukes, 6-1, when they met last spring on WVU’s home courts. Tomorrow’s match is being held at the Alpha Tennis and Fitness of Pittsburgh.
“The team has become more cohesive,” concludes Samara. “They’re being more proactive and making decisions on their own. We’ve definitely turned a corner.”
