Gymnastics: WVU Ranked on Vault, Floor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia gymnastics team pushed its streak of vault and floor national rankings to nine weeks, as the Mountaineers check in at No. 18 and No. 23, respectively, in this week’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers (9-6, 6-1 EAGL) moved up one spot on floor and boast a 48.93 regional qualifying score (RQS). They dropped one ranking on vault (49.01).
Though WVU’s team RQS jumped to 194.845, the team continues to rank just outside the Top 25 for the second straight week at No. 27.
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer and senior Amy Bieski own a collective five national rankings.
Sloanhoffer, the six-time reigning East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week, ranks No. 16 on beam (9.855), No. 31 on floor (9.85) and No. 37 on vault (9.85), while Bieski ranks No. 28 in the all-around (39.075) and No. 48 on floor (9.84).
The Mountaineers dropped one spot to No. 4 in the Southeast Region. The team also ranks No. 3 on vault and floor, No. 4 on bars and No. 5 on beam.
Bieski owns five regional rankings. The Nanticoke, Pa., native ranks No. 5 in the all-around, No. 10 on floor, No. 14 on vault (9.825) and bars (9.78), and No. 16 on beam (9.745).
Sloanhoffer and sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe each are ranked on the same three events. Sloanhoffer, a Cornwall, N.Y., native, ranks No. 5 on beam and No. 7 on vault and floor, while Goldschrafe, a native of Franklin Lakes, N.J., ranks No. 19 on beam (9.74), No. 20 on vault (9.765) and No. 24 on floor (9.755).
Four Mountaineers join Bieski in the bars Top 25: Emily Kerwin (No. 10, 9.805), Nicole Roach (No. 17, 9.76), Kaylyn Millick (No. 21, 9.725) and Alysha Pretzello (No. 25, 9.7).
Millick also ranks No. 17 on floor (9.795), while junior Tina Maloney ranks No. 11 on vault (9.83).
Despite moving down to No. 2 in the league, the Mountaineers moved up to No. 1 on floor and also retained their top vault ranking. The squad also ranks No. 2 on bars and No. 4 on beam.
Sloanhoffer and Bieski are ranked No. 1 on vault and all-around, respectively. Sloanhoffer also ranks No. 2 on beam and No. 4 on floor, while Bieski checks in at No. 5 on floor, No. 7 on vault and No. 8 on bars and beam.
Maloney ranks No. 4 on vault, while Roach and Goldschrafe rank No. 10 on bars and beam, respectively.
The Mountaineers closed out their regular-season road schedule with a 196.525-194.925 loss at No. 12 Arkansas on March 4. Though the Mountaineers were swept in the four events, the team hit 24-for-24 routines and enjoyed several standout individual performances. Sloanhoffer tied for first on vault with a 9.85. She and classmate Makenzie Bristol also tied for third place on floor with 9.8 scores. Additionally, Bieski finished fourth in the all-around with 39.05 points and scored 9.775 on bars and beam to pace the squad on each event.
WVU closes out its regular season on Saturday, March 12, and plays host to No. 10 Penn State at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The meet is the final home competition for six seniors: Bieski, Naja Johnson, Stephanie Keaton, Kerwin, Faye Meaden and Pretzello.
