Baseball: Mountaineers Fall to Elon

ELON, N.C. – The West Virginia University baseball team lost to Elon, 17-1, on Saturday afternoon at the Elon Invitational in Elon, N.C.
The Mountaineers (3-6) fell victim to Elon (6-4) senior Ken Ferrer, as the right-hander tossed 7.1 innings to get the win. Ferrer only allowed five hits and one run. West Virginia produced five and committed one error.
Freshman Harrison Musgrave started for the Mountaineers, pitching five innings and giving up six hits and four earned runs, taking the loss. Four pitchers came on in relief to complete the game for West Virginia.
Sophomore catcher Matt Malloy led the Mountaineers with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate and recording one run.
Elon scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the first when left fielder Jake Luce and second baseman Cyle Rasmus had back-to-back doubles to begin the inning, with Rasmus driving in Luce. After advancing to third on a passed ball, Rasmus scored on a single from designated hitter Alex Swim to take the early lead at 2-0. After hitting Grant McCoury with a pitch, Musgrave was able to settle down and get three straight outs.
The Phoenix scored another two runs in the third inning to make it 4-0. McCoury and Neal Pritchard both scored runs after McCoury walked to start the inning and Pritchard reached on an error. Both runs were unearned.
Elon scored five more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to extend the lead to 9-0. In the fifth, after a walk to McCoury, Pritchard homered to left center off the scoreboard to put the Phoenix up 6-0.
WVU will play its final game at the Elon Invitational against Wright State on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. Wright State defeated the Mountaineers 6-5 on Friday.
