MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – One of the toughest wrestling conferences in the country, the Eastern Wrestling League continues its annual EWL Championships on Sunday, Mar. 6, at Bloomsburg University’s Nelson Field House in Bloomsburg, Pa.
The one-day tournament is set to begin at 10 a.m. on Sunday, when West Virginia will have its hands full with league leaders Pitt and Edinboro as well as tough opponents from Lock Haven, Clarion, Bloomsburg and Cleveland State to determine who will advance to the NCAA Championships on Mar. 17-19 in Philadelphia, Pa.
“We almost won the EWL dual meet championship, but let it get away from us at key points in our matches against Pitt and Edinboro,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “Our focus has turned to winning an EWL tournament championship, which is going to take an outstanding effort from everyone in the program.”
West Virginia will begin the tournament in third place following the regular season results. Pitt once again enters the tourney with a perfect 6-0 dual meet record, while Edinboro looks to defend its tournament championship from a year ago. The Mountaineers finished in fifth place at last year’s tournament.
WVU enters the EWLs with five ranked wrestlers in No. 23 Shane Young (125), No. 17 Nathan Pennesi (133), No. 31 Brandon Rader (149), No. 20 Donnie Jones (165) and No. 20 Matt Ryan (184). Pitt has seven ranked grapplers, while Edinboro also brings five to the mix.
As each weight class features several ranked wrestlers, the 184-pound class is highlighted with the nation’s No. 1 wrestler in Edinboro’s Chris Honeycutt. Following Honeycutt is Pitt’s No. 19 Max Thommuseit, No. 20 Matt Ryan and Bloomsburg’s No. 23 Nate Graham.
The 157-pound class also has four ranked wrestlers in Clarion’s No. 5 James Fleming, Bloomsburg’s No. 21 Frank Hickman, Pitt’s No. 25 Donnie Tasser and Edinboro’s No. 26 Johnny Greisheimer.
WVU’s Shane Young leads the way at 125 pounds while redshirt freshman Pennesi follows Edinboro’s No. 15 Eric Morrill closely behind. WVU’s Michael Morales (141), Rader, Ryan Goodman (157), Jones, Alex Meade (174), Kyle Rooney (197) and heavyweight Philip Mandzik will also see multiple ranked grapplers as they compete for individual championships. At 174 pounds, Meade (5-1 EWL record) has an open opportunity to grab the title as no wrestler is currently ranked in his field.
“We’ve put in very good cycles in preparation for the tournament and now we’re just fine-tuning and getting ready for the tournament,” Turnbull says. “If everyone wrestles to their potential, we can send seven or eight guys to the national tournament and it is our goal to do that.”
