MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Chelsea Carrier led the West Virginia University track and field team this weekend, with a first place showing in the 100-meter hurdles at the Stanford Invitational.
Carrier finished first in the event with a BIG EAST qualifying time of 13.27, narrowly missing the school record of 13.20. Freshman Chené Townsend also qualified with conference standards with a time of 14.02 in the preliminary round of the event.
All together, 10 student-athletes posted BIG EAST qualifying marks this weekend, after completing competition at the Stanford Invitational and the Bill Van Horne Invitational in Wheeling, W.Va.
“We came this far west to get a few BIG EAST and NCAA regional qualifying marks. But we are coming home with four NCAA regional marks and a slew of BIG EAST marks,” coach Sean Cleary says. “This was a nice way to get the outdoor season underway.
“Back in Wheeling, I am very happy with our throwers. The group has obviously worked very hard this winter, and it shows.”
At Stanford, the Mountaineers had three to post conference qualifying standards in the 1,500-meter race, including seniors Keri Bland (4:22.76) and Kaylyn Christopher (4:25.17) and sophomore Stephanie Aldea (4:33.44).
In the field events, WVU saw two post BIG EAST qualifying performances as junior Meghan Mock finished fourth in the long jump after clearing 5.70 meters, while NCAA qualifier Katelyn Williams finished in 11th in the high jump (1.71 meters).
Senior April Rotilio made her season debut in the 400-meter dash with an overall fifth-place showing with a time of 57.76, while also finishing 11th in the 200-meter dash, crossing the line in 24.38. Both marks qualify for the conference championships.
The Mountaineers were also represented well in the 4x400-meter relay, as the team finished eighth with a time of 3:49.45.
At the Bill Van Horne Invitational, Terina Miller led the throwers with a first-place showing in the hammer throw. Miller took the top spot with a conference qualifying performance of 50.61 meters, while Heather Adams followed in fifth (43.43 meters), Alanna Pritts in ninth (38.26 meters) and Brittany Thomas finished (38.02 meters).
Brittany Fink led in the discus with a second-place finish (39.78 meters), with Adams following in third (39.68 meters) and Thomas in sixth (35.63 meters)
In the pole vault, Katlyn Shelar carried over her success from the indoor season to finish second with a height of 3.50-meters to post a conference qualifying mark.
Sophomore Jordan Hamric also had a good day, finishing first in the 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 11:32.26.
West Virginia will continue its outdoor season next weekend at the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary on April 1-2.
