Women's Tennis: Richmond Tops WVU

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team (7-10, 3-3 BIG EAST) fell to the Richmond Spiders today, in a 0-7 match in Richmond, Va.
Freshman Mary Chupa and sophomore Emily Mathis captured WVU’s lone win in an 8-3 match in the No. 1 doubles spot.
The Spiders came back to capture the doubles points with wins over junior Veronica Cardenas and freshman Liv Pettersson (8-5) in the No. 2 spot, along with an 8-1 victory over freshman Anna Rodionova and junior Catie Wickline in the No. 3 spot.
Richmond continued the lead by sweeping the singles competition.
Mathis (No. 1) fell in a tiebreaker, 6-3, 7-6(5), while Chupa lost, 6-3, 6-3, in the No. 3 spot.
“Emily and Mary did a great job, despite losing their matches in singles,” says coach Tina Samara. “Win or lose, we definitely see some improvements in these two.”
Cardenas, Pilsbury, Rodionova and Pettersson contributed in the No. 3-6 singles spots, but were defeated in their respective matches.
“We were obviously disappointed with the outcome of this match,“ Samara concludes. “Hopefully, we get everyone healthy and back into the lineup before our match against Rutgers.”
The Mountaineers will continue action on Sunday, April 3, as they play host to BIG EAST foe Rutgers in their first outdoor match of the season at the WVU Tennis Courts.
