MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – A two-run single by outfielder Brady Wilson to tie the game with two outs in the bottom of the seventh and a game-winning single by designated hitter Matt Malloy in the bottom of the eighth led the West Virginia University baseball team to a 7-6 walk-off victory in game one of a doubleheader on Saturday afternoon against Canisius at Hawley Field.
Down 6-2, a double by shortstop Grant Buckner and walks to second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo and Kevin Griffin loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. First baseman Ryan McBroom then hit the second out of the inning, but was able to drive in DiBartolomeo on a sacrifice fly to center field. Chris Rasky pinch hit and was hit by a pitch to once again load the bases. Pinch hitter Cody Dolan then took a full-count pitch and grounded it to second base, where the fielder was unable to handle the ball and Buckner scored to bring the deficit to 6-4. Wilson then followed with a single to left field plating Rasky and Griffin to complete the comeback.
Tied at 6-6 in the bottom of the eighth, DiBartolomeo singled to center field to lead off the inning, followed by a Buckner sacrifice bunt. With DiBartolomeo on second, Malloy singled through the right side and DiBartolomeo was able to score from second on a perfect headfirst slide avoiding the catcher’s tag for the victory.
The Mountaineers (11-8) scored seven runs on seven hits without an error, while Canisius (5-11) scored six runs on six hits with two errors.
DiBartolomeo finished 2-for-4 with two runs scored and an RBI, while Wilson went 2-for-3 with one run and two RBIs. McBroom went 1-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs.
Zach Bargeron (1-0) took the win in two innings of no-hit and no-run relief for his first career victory. Starter Harrison Musgrave went six innings, allowing six runs on six hits.
The loss was awarded to Nathan Linseman (1-1), who pitched 0.2 of an inning, allowing three hits and one run. Starter Shane Davis pitched six innings and allowed just two runs on three hits.
Canisius scored three runs in the top of the second and top of the fifth, highlighted by a two-run single up the middle by Drew Pettit in the top of the fifth.
West Virginia’s two runs in the bottom of the second and bottom of the third came from McBroom’s homer to left center and a single up the middle by DiBartolomeo, scoring Wilson.
