Baseball: WVU Defeats Colonels

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Redshirt freshman Marshall Thompson threw his second consecutive successful outing en route to West Virginia’s 8-5 victory in game one of a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday afternoon at Hawley Field.
Thompson (2-0) pitched a complete game, allowing seven hits and five runs in his second career start. The left-hander also struck out seven.
EKU starter Paul Duncan (0-2) took the loss, giving up six runs on seven hits in only 1.1 innings pitched.
West Virginia (9-7) was led offensively by shortstop Grant Buckner and designated hitter Jeremy Gum, each driving in two runs. Buckner finished 2-for-4, while Gum went 1-for-2 and was also hit by a pitch.
Outfielder Jacob Daniel of Eastern Kentucky (6-9) had the game’s lone home run, a solo shot in the top of the seventh. Daniel also recorded an RBI ground out in the first inning. First baseman Matt Phipps went 2-for-3 with two RBIs and one run scored.
WVU scored all eight runs in the first three innings with four in the first, three in the second and one in third.
West Virginia began the bottom of the first with five consecutive singles from Brady Wilson, Justin McDavid, Dan DiBartolomeo, Buckner and Gum. After a ground out by catcher Kevin Griffin, Ryan McBroom hit a sacrifice fly to center field, scoring Buckner to complete the first inning scoring.
Mark Dvoroznak and Wilson led off the bottom of the second with back-to-back singles and were advanced one base by a sacrifice bunt from McDavid. After a Colonel pitching change, DiBartolomeo singled, scoring Dvoroznak. Buckner drove in Wilson with a ground out to second, followed by a Griffin single to drive in Gum.
McDavid singled to left field in the bottom of the third, scoring Dvoroznak for West Virginia’s final run of the game.
The Mountaineers finished with eight runs on 13 innings with two errors, while the Colonels scored five runs on seven hits with no errors.
