MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Thirteen West Virginia gymnasts have been named to the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) all-Academic Team.
“We stress academics every day, and I am pleased that many of our student-athletes are being recognized for their efforts,” says coach Linda Burdette-Good. “I always like to see the team perform well in the classroom and in the gym.”
Seniors Amy Bieski (speech pathology and audiology), Naja Johnson (multidisciplinary studies) and Stephanie Keaton (fashion design and merchandising) highlight this year’s honoree list with their fourth consecutive awards. Since the league’s formation in 1996, 17 WVU seniors have received the award in each of their four seasons.
Classmate Emily Kerwin (creative arts) is the fourth senior recognized and picked up her second honor, while graduate Jessica Young (advertising) earned her third.
Juniors Tina Maloney (nursing) and Nicole Roach (pre-elementary education) scored their third and second career awards, respectively.
Sophomore Arlene Hathaway (pre-elementary education) was honored for the second straight season, and classmate Kaylyn Millick (pre-nursing), a transfer from Eastern Michigan, received her first career honor. Four freshmen also were honored for the first time: Makenzie Bristol (pre-journalism), Marina Galante (sport and exercise psychology), Hope Sloanhoffer (exercise physiology) and Bethany Yurko (design studies).
Ninety-one gymnasts from all eight EAGL teams were honored. Rutgers led the way for the second straight season and earned 20 awards.
In order to be named to the EAGL all-Academic team, student-athletes must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of 3.0 or higher. Freshmen are eligible if they earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher in the fall semester.
Awards will be presented to the honorees at the 2011 EAGL Championship Banquet this Friday, March 18, in Washington, D.C.
The Mountaineers (9-7, 6-1 EAGL) next compete at the league championship, hosted by George Washington, on Saturday, March 19, at 2 p.m., at the Charles E. Smith Center, in Washington, D.C.
