Baseball: WVU Set for Doubleheader

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University baseball team begins the second week of its homestand with a doubleheader against Eastern Kentucky on Wednesday, March 16, at Hawley Field. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
The Mountaineers (8-7) face the Colonels (6-8) for the ninth time and first time since 1983. WVU owns a 5-3 edge over Eastern Kentucky.
WVU finished 5-1 last week, defeating Bryant in a doubleheader and taking three of four from Rider this past weekend.
Designated hitter Jeremy Gum leads the team with a .366 batting average with four doubles, two home runs and six RBIs. Second baseman Dan DiBartolomeo has been on a hot streak as of late, batting .365 with 14 runs, four doubles, a triple and two home runs.
Redshirt freshman Marshall Thompson is expected to start game one on the mound for the Mountaineers. He pitched his first collegiate game in last week’s doubleheader with Bryant and earned the win, going six innings and allowing one hit. The game two starter is undecided.
Offensively, Eastern Kentucky is led by infielder Richie Rodriguez who is batting .444 in 14 games with 10 runs, four doubles, one triple and nine RBIs. Outfielder Jacob Daniel has registered three home runs and driven in 17 runs, while batting .347. Austin Grisham and Matt Phipps are also both batting over .300.
