Baseball: Mountaineers Sweep Twinbill

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The WVU baseball team earned its second victory of the day with an 11-5 victory over Rider on Saturday evening at Hawley Field.
The Mountaineers finished with 11 runs on 11 hits, with one error, while the Broncs scored five runs on 12 hits and committed four errors.
Offensively, West Virginia was led by Dan DiBartolomeo who went 3-for-6 with a double, two runs scored and an RBI. Chris Rasky went 2-for-2 at the plate, with a double, run scored and an RBI. Mason Heyne and Steve Galella each went 3-for-5 with one home run a piece.
Andy Berry (2-1) went 5.2 innings for WVU, giving up 10 hits and five runs, while Rider starter Nate Epply (1-2) only went 3.2 innings and allowed eight runs on eight hits. Senior Marcus Broadwater pitched 3.1 innings of two-hit, no-run ball and struck out two.
Rider got off to a quick start once again with Heyne’s first-inning home run that scored Brandon Cotton who reached on a lead-off walk.
Justin McDavid drove in the first run for the Mountaineers with a double after an 11-pitch at bat to left center, plating Brady Wilson who led off with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. McDavid then advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven in by DiBartolomeo, who singled up the middle to tie the game at 2-2.
After Rasky walked to begin the bottom of the second, Colin Durborow laid down a sacrifice bunt, advancing Rasky to second and reaching first on an error by the pitcher. Matt Malloy followed with another sacrifice, moving both runners into scoring position. Wilson was able to hit into a fielder’s choice to third, scoring Rasky. McDavid followed up with his second hit of the afternoon to drive in Durborow to bring the score to 4-2.
The Mountaineers extended the lead to 5-2 with a run in the bottom of the third after a Durborow single to left field that scored Buckner.
After a home run from Rider’s Galella in the top of the fourth, the Mountaineers added three in the bottom half of the inning to make it 8-3. DiBartolomeo started the rally with a single to left field, followed by Buckner getting hit by a pitch. Both base runners were knocked in by a Ryan McBroom double to left field. Rasky then hit a double to left to score McBroom and end the scoring for the Mountaineers.

Wilson began the inning with a double down the left field line, followed by McDavid reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher with Wilson scoring on the error. DiBartolomeo doubled to left field, advancing McDavid to third. After Gum was hit to load the bases, Buckner hit a sacrifice fly to right field, plating McDavid. McBroom then was hit by a pitch to load the bases, as was Mark Dvoroznak, who scored DiBartolomeo
The teams will complete the four-game series with a doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at Hawley Field. First pitch is slated to be at 1 p.m.
