Gymnastics: EAGL Honors Sloanhoffer

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia freshman gymnast Hope Sloanhoffer was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week a league-best sixth time today.
The award is the ninth of the season for the Cornwall, N.Y., native, and her second straight rookie recognition. She also has been named the EAGL Specialist of the Week three times this year.
Sloanhoffer is the first Mountaineer to earn at least six rookie weekly honors. Senior teammate Amy Bieski (2008) and Mehgan Morris (2006) both garnered five honors as freshmen; Morris was named the 2006 EAGL Rookie of the Year.
Sloanhoffer’s most recent recognition follows her stellar performance in the Mountaineers’ (9-5, 6-1 EAGL) 195.725-194.325 home victory over 2010 EAGL champion North Carolina on Saturday. She matched two career-best scores and finished first on each event she competed. The league’s No. 1-ranked vaulter, she opened the meet with a 9.875, first-place finish. Also ranked No. 1 on beam, she anchored the Mountaineers’ lineup with another 9.875 score and her second first-place finish; the mark matched her career-best number. Sloanhoffer concluded the meet on floor, where she helped WVU match a season-best 49.225 mark with a first place, career-best 9.875 routine.
Nationally, Sloanhoffer ranks No. 11 on beam, No. 20 on floor and No. 40 on vault. In addition to her EAGL vault and beam rankings, she also ranks No. 2 on floor.
Three Mountaineers have earned a league-best 13 weekly honors this season.
WVU closes out its road regular-season schedule at No. 12 Arkansas on Friday, March 4, at Barnhill Arena, at 8 p.m. ET.
