Women's Track: Carrier Breaks Record

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Chelsea Carrier led the West Virginia University track and field team this afternoon breaking a school and personal-best record in the 60-meter hurdles at the GaREAT Collegiate Invitational in Geneva, Ohio.
The Buckhannon, W.Va., native finished first in the event with a time of 8.21, which qualifies as an NCAA provisional time. The time also broke the previous school record of 8.22, which was set by Stacian Brown in 1999.
Freshman Chené Townsend also performed well in the event, finishing in third place with a personal-best time of 8.53, while also placing sixth in the 200-meter dash (25.42).
Senior Kaylyn Christopher and junior Jessica O'Connell also posted excellent showings in the mile, finishing in second (4:41.61) and third (4:42.00).
In the 3,000-meter run, junior Sarah-Anne Brault led with a fourth-place showing (9:42.74), while senior Keri Bland finished eighth (9:56.43) and freshman Sarah Martinelli finished ninth (10:01.63).
WVU was also represented well in the 400-meter dash with freshman Shakiyla Cosby placing sixth (58.50), freshmen Jenna Barretto and Allison Tyree finishing in eighth (59.11) and ninth (59.62), respectively, and junior Brittany Wolford finishing 10th (1:00.85).
In the field events, sophomore Heather Adams threw a personal-best in the weight throw, after a BIG EAST qualifying performance of 15.27 meters, good for third place.
Junior Meghan Mock continued to compete well in the long jump with a second-place finish (5.76-meters), while sophomore Sydney Cummings finished third in the high jump (1.70-meters).
The Mountaineers will continue action next weekend with the Gold/Blue Meet at the WVU Shell Building on Feb. 12, before traveling to the BIG EAST Championships on Feb. 19-20.
