Gymnastics: WVU Ranked on Vault, Floor

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following season-best home scores on vault and floor, the West Virginia gymnastics team is nationally ranked in both events in today’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers (9-5, 6-1 EAGL) dropped to No. 17 on vault and No. 24 on floor with respective 48.98 and 48.885 regional qualifying scores (RQS). Additionally, after re-entering the overall team rankings at No. 24 last week, WVU dropped out this week and sits at No. 27 with a 194.675 RQS.
Individually, three Mountaineers own a collective six rankings.
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer is nationally ranked in each event in which she competes. The Cornwall, N.Y., native ranks No. 11 on beam (9.855), No. 20 on floor (9.85) and No. 40 on vault (9.84).
Senior Amy Bieski ranks No. 27 in the all-around (39.0) and No. 35 on floor (9.84), while junior Tina Maloney ranks No. 46 on vault (9.83).
Regionally, the Mountaineers continue to rank No. 3 in the Southeast behind No. 1 Florida and No. 6 Georgia. WVU also ranks No. 3 on vault, bars (48.67) and floor, and No. 4 on beam (48.38).
Sloanhoffer, the reigning East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Rookie of the Week and an eight-time league weekly honoree, owns three top five regional rankings: No. 2 beam, No. 3 floor and No. 5 vault.
Bieski, the two-time reigning EAGL Gymnast of the Week, checks in at No. 5 in the all-around and on floor, No. 11 on vault (9.825), No. 13 on bars (9.765) and No. 17 on beam (9.705).
WVU owns a combined 15 individual rankings on bars, floor and vault.
Senior Emily Kerwin paces the Mountaineers on bars and ranks No. 8 with a 9.805 RQS. Junior Nicole Roach checks in at No. 14 (9.761), while sophomore Kaylyn Millick ranks No. 18 (9.725), and senior Alysha Pretzello is No. 20 (9.695).
Three Mountaineers follow Sloanhoffer and Bieski in the floor rankings: Millick (No. 15, 9.785), sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe (No. 18, 9.755) and Maloney (No. 21, 9.715).
Maloney joins Sloanhoffer in the vault top 10, ranking No. 9, while Kerwin ranks No. 20 (9.725) and Goldschrafe is No. 22 (9.72). Goldschrafe also checks in at No. 15 on beam (9.72).
WVU ranks No. 1 in the EAGL for the second time in as many weeks. The squad also owns the top vault and bars rankings, is No. 2 on floor and No. 3 on beam.
A Mountaineer owns the No. 1 individual EAGL ranking in four of five events for the second straight week.

The Mountaineers recently scored their sixth league victory on Feb. 26 and defeated defending EAGL champion North Carolina, 195.725-194.325, at the WVU Coliseum. The team’s point total was its highest since Feb. 12, 2010, and ranks No. 27 in the program’s 38-year history. Included in the Mountaineers’ victory was a season-best 49.225 floor score and a 49.05 showing on vault, the team’s highest home score of the season.
WVU closes out its regular-season road schedule at No. 12 Arkansas on Friday, March 4, at Barnhill Arena, at 8 p.m. EST. The Razorbacks are coming off a 196.7-196.1 victory over No. 1 Florida on Feb. 25.
