Gymnastics: No. 24 WVU Trumps UNC

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Behind a season-high 49.225 floor showing, the No. 24-ranked West Virginia gymnastics team compiled its third straight season-best score and triumphed over East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foe North Carolina, 195.725-194.325, this evening in its annual “Pink Meet” at the WVU Coliseum.
The score is the team’s highest since earning 195.65 points in its “Pink Meet” win over Ohio State on Feb. 12, 2010. Additionally, the point total is the 27th-best in the program’s 38-year history.
Tonight’s team total is WVU’s third straight 195-plus score, the squad’s longest streak of scoring 195.0 or better since posting five straight marks in 2009 (Feb. 9-March 8).
The Mountaineers (9-5, 6-1 EAGL) trumped the reigning league champion Tar Heels in three of four events, winning vault (49.05-48.525), bars (48.975-48.4) and floor (49.225-48.525). UNC scored a 48.875-48.475 victory on beam.
“We are knocking on the door of a 196.0 score,” says coach Linda Burdette-Good of her 640th career win. “I am happy to see our score improving each week, but we still have a few mental mistakes that we need to work past.
“Overall, I was happy we put together a solid meet, especially on pink day.”
After earning an advantage in the first rotation that they would never relinquish, the Mountaineers counted five scores of 9.8 or better and solidified their sixth league victory of the season with a 49.225 floor showing in the fourth rotation; the squad previously earned the season-best mark on Jan. 29.
Freshman Makenzie Bristol opened the stellar rotation with a career-best 9.8 score. Sophomores Chelsea Goldschrafe and Kaylyn Millick followed with 9.825 and 9.85 scores, respectively; the mark matches Goldschrafe’s career high. The duo paved the way for season-best scores from freshman Hope Sloanhoffer and senior Amy Bieski, as each gymnast earned 9.875 marks and tied UNC’s Morgan Evans for first place overall.
Sloanhoffer, the reigning five-time EAGL Rookie of the Week honoree, scored 9.875 and finished first on each event she competed this evening. The Cornwall, N.Y., native has scored 9.8 or better in 22 of 27 routines this season.
Bieski, the EAGL’s No. 1-ranked all-around gymnast, finished first overall with a score of 38.675. The mark pushes the Nanticoke, Pa., native’s career-point total to 1,823.6 and moves her up three spots to No. 5 on the all-time WVU career points list.
WVU opened the meet with its strongest home vault rotation of the season, as three gymnast scored 9.8 or better. Sloanhoffer, ranked No. 1 in the league, finished first overall with a 9.875. Bieski scored 9.825 and finished second overall, while sophomore Alaska Richardson tallied a 9.8, her third 9.8-plus score in four meets, and placed fourth.

Building up to the score all season, junior Nicole Roach won the event with a career-high 9.875. Senior Alysha Pretzello finished second overall and also scored a career best with a 9.85 mark. Senior Emily Kerwin, the league’s No. 1 bars worker, scored 9.8 and finished third, while Bieski tallied 9.75 for a fifth-place finish.
