Women's Tennis: Mountaineers Fall to the Orange

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University tennis team fell to Syracuse, today, in a 0-7 match in Syracuse, N.Y.
“We have a lot to work on, especially our level of intensity,” says coach Tina Samara. “Syracuse is a good team, so I think that our girls went out there already expecting them to win. We lacked that desire.”
The Orange started the match by capturing the doubles point.
The No. 3 pair of senior Ashley Pilsbury and freshman Melis Tanik captured the lone win of the day with an 8-3 victory over SU's Jacquelynn Tang and Aleah Marrow.
WVU’s pair of junior Veronica Cardenas and freshman Mary Chupa put up a fight in the No. 1 spot, but fell 8-6 to the Orange’s Emily Harman and Maddie Kobelt.
The Orange continued their winning-streak in the singles competition with wins in every spot. Chupa had a close match in the No. 3 spot, but fell in the third set, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4, to SU’s Christina Tan.
“(Syracuse) wanted it more,” concludes Samara. “Even when they were up 5-0 in a set, they were still fighting just as hard. That’s what you have to be like in every match, because that’s what makes you better.”
WVU’s match against Villanova was canceled due to inclement weather conditions.
The Mountaineers will continue action on March 9, as they travel to Pittsburgh, Pa., to go up against Duquesne at noon.
