MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – On the heels of two straight season-high scores, the No. 24 West Virginia gymnastics team plays host to reigning East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) champion North Carolina on Saturday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
The meet is a “Pink Meet,” and the Mountaineers (8-5, 5-1 EAGL) will don their pink uniforms. Fans also are encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
WVU owns a 25-14 series advantage over UNC and split its 2010 meetings with the Tar Heels. After scoring a 193.775-193.0 victory in Chapel Hill, N.C., the Mountaineers lost, 196.025-195.075, to UNC at the EAGL Championship.
“Tomorrow is going to be a good competition,” says coach Linda Burdette-Good. “UNC has some outstanding athletes on each event. They have a more experienced team this year. They are going to give us a fight, and we hope to fight right back.
“We have to focus on our routines tomorrow and compete to our capabilities. We cannot go into the competition trying to hit career routines. Our practices in Cary Gym have been excellent, and we need to mimic those practices tomorrow night.”
WVU plays host to its second meet in six days after scoring a season-best 195.225 and finishing second to No. 1 Florida (196.875) on Feb. 20, in the team’s only home quad-meet of the season. The Mountaineers scored victories over EAGL foes New Hampshire (194.4) and George Washington (193.05).
WVU was solid across the gym and especially strong on vault and bars, scoring 49.0 on each apparatus; the bars mark is a season high. The team also tallied 48.925 on floor and 48.3 on beam.
Senior Amy Bieski had a career day, scoring a personal-best 39.325 and finishing first overall. The two-time reigning EAGL Gymnast of the Week also finished second on bars with a career-best 9.875 score. Additionally, she earned scores of 9.85 and 9.825 on vault and floor, respectively, and 9.775 on beam.
Ranked No. 8 on the all-time WVU career points list with 1,784.925 points, Bieski has the potential to move up three spots this weekend, as she only needs 26.45 points to pass Jana Perry (1,811.375, 1990-93) for the No. 5 ranking.
A Nanticoke, Pa., native, Bieski is tied with Tar Heel Morgan Evans for the league’s No. 1 all-around ranking. Bieski also ranks No. 3 on vault.
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer, an eight-time EAGL weekly award winner and the current league rookie of the week, enters the meet ranked No. 1 on vault and beam and No. 2 on floor. The Cornwall, N.Y., native has scored 9.8 or better in 19 of 24 routines this season, including matching 9.85 floor and beam scores last weekend. The marks were good enough for third and fourth place, respectively.
Senior Emily Kerwin also owns a No. 1 league ranking, as the Central, S.C., native is tops on bars. She has scored a career-best 9.825 twice this season.
Junior Tina Maloney, ranked No. 2 in the league on vault, won the event outright last week with a career-best 9.9 score. The Hanover, Ind., native has earned the mark twice this season. Additionally, after scoring 38.15 in her career all-around debut, she has the potential to compete as an all-arounder again tomorrow.
The Tar Heels (9-3, 2-2 EAGL) are coming of a 195.65-193.55 victory over Pitt on Feb. 20. UNC’s winning score was both a team and league high.
UNC sophomore Elizabeth Durkac, the EAGL Specialist of the Week, set or matched career highs on bars (9.825), beam (9.85) and floor (9.775) against the Panthers.
Tomorrow also is WVU’s Alumni Meet, and Mountaineers from the last 38 years will be recognized throughout the competition.
