MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team is set to travel to Syracuse, N.Y., on Feb. 26-27 to compete against BIG EAST foes Villanova on Saturday and Syracuse on Sunday at 10 a.m.
“We have shown the capability of playing well against good teams, like they did against Pitt, but we can’t just show up and win,” says coach Tina Samara. “We don’t necessary need to work on our technique, but more on our team’s mentality.”
WVU holds a record of 2-6, while going 1-1 in the BIG EAST after falling to Louisville, 0-7, and defeating Pitt, 5-2.
The Mountaineers will go up against the Wildcats (1-1 overall) on Saturday, then face the Orange on Sunday. Syracuse now holds a record of 7-2 overall and 3-0 in the BIG EAST, after Boston University halted its six-match win streak last Sunday.
“I know (Syracuse’s head coach) Luke Jensen and I know he’s going to have that team fired up,” adds Samara. “That’s what he did so well when he played and I’m sure he imposed that same mentality on his team. We’re going to need to show up in every spot to win these matches.”
This weekend’s matches will be held at Syracuse’s Drumlins Tennis Center.
