VSR: Trio Named Athletes of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following record-breaking performances over the weekend, swimmers Rachael Burnett and Mandie Nugent and sprinter Chelsea Carrier have been named WVU Student-Athletes of the Week.
Burnett, a native of Springfield, Va., started the meet individually with a win in the 500 free in a time of 4:43.04, her second-consecutive season title. She also took first in the 400 IM with a school record time of 4:14.41, almost two seconds in front of the second place competitor.
A Greater Manchester, England, native, Nugent won the 200 fly on the final day of competition with a time of 1:57.00 after setting a new BIG EAST and school record time of 1:56.64 in the preliminary session. Nugent also finished second in the 100 fly with a time of 53.15. They were named co-BIG EAST Women’s Most Outstanding Swimmers.
Carrier’s first-place performance in the pentathlon with 4,170 points broke her own school record of 4,136 points as she won two conference titles and was named the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Athlete. The finish also marked the second -highest total ever at the BIG EAST Championships and puts her third on the nation’s top performance list.
She returned the next day to win the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.17, marking the first time someone has won back-to-back titles in the event since Villanova’s Charmaine Walker in 2000-2001.
