MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The 2011 BIG EAST Swimming & Diving Championships began with the swimming portion on Wednesday evening with the West Virginia University squad recording three NCAA “B” cut times.
After the first night of swimming competition, the men’s squad is in fourth with 93 points, while the women are in seventh with 64 points.
The women’s 800 free relay of Kata Fodor, Danielle Smith, Mandie Nugent and Rachael Burnett barely missed first place with a time of 7:11.32. After Fodor opened the race with a leading leg of 1:47.30, the Mountaineers fell behind to third before Burnett made a ferocious comeback that fell just short of Louisville’s first-place time of 7:11.10.
In the men’s 800 free relay, Taylor Camp, Jared Goldthorpe, Jake Querciagrossa and Hugh Simmonds were in third after the first leg and finished in that position with a time of 6:32.22. Louisville finished first with a BIG EAST Championships record time of 6:23.23.
"Tonight was a great start to our meet, we obviously swam very well," coach Vic Riggs said. "Having Kata set the tone was huge and Rachael's final leg was what we knew she could do."
Nugent and Burnett were quickly called back into action in the 200 medley relay with Rachael Gorrie and Jaryn Studer. The squad finished with a fifth-place time of 1:43.22. Louisville again placed first with a time of 1:38.43.
In the final event of the evening, the men’s squad of Camp, George Farquhar, Brad Eichenseer and Tim Squires swam to an exciting second-place finish in 1:27.99. Farquhar was able to bring the Mountaineers from fourth to second place, while Eichenseer and Squires brought Louisville’s victory to just a tenth of a second.
"All of our swimmers had lifetime best times. To finish the night with our men's 200 medley relay was special," Riggs said. "To have the top splits in the breast by George and free by Tim sets us up well for our sprints."
The NCAA “B” cuts that were achieved were both 800 free relays and the men’s 200 medley relay.
The championships will continue with preliminary rounds at 10 a.m., tomorrow morning, followed by the finals at 6 p.m., tomorrow evening.
