MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia senior gymnast Amy Bieski was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Gymnast of the Week today.
The honor is the second of the season for the Nanticoke, Pa., native, as she earned the league’s first award of the year on Jan. 11. She is the only gymnast to earn the honor twice this season.
Additionally, today’s recognition is the eighth of Bieski’s career. The Mountaineer all-arounder was honored a league-best four times in 2010.
Bieski’s recognition follows her third place all-around finish with a season-best 39.2 score at then-No. 15 Ohio State on Feb. 12. She opened the day matching a season-best 9.8 bars score and tying for first place. She then moved on to vault, where she nailed a near-stick and tied for second place with a season-best 9.875 mark. From there, Bieski scored 9.75 on floor and 9.775 on beam for ninth- and sixth-place finishes, respectively. Bieski’s beam score was the meet’s fourth best.
Bieski ranks in the Top 10 in the league in three events: No. 5 all-around, No. 6 vault and No. 7 bars.
Three Mountaineers have earned a league-best 10 weekly honors this season.
Bieski’s individual achievements helped WVU (6-4, 3-1 EAGL) score a season-best 195.1 in a losing effort at OSU (195.6) last Saturday.
The Mountaineers return to the WVU Coliseum after a two-week road trip and play host to No. 1 Florida and EAGL foes New Hampshire and George Washington on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. The quad-meet is a designated “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, Coca-Colas and popcorn available for $1 each.
