MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (February 15, 2011) – Two members of the West Virginia University cross country team have been named all-academic honorees announced by the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
Sophomore Kaitlyn Gillespie and redshirt sophomore Sarah-Anne Brault were given the honor for their performances in the classroom and in competition.
“It is a tribute to the hard work and dedication these women and their teammates exhibit throughout the year,” says WVU coach Sean Cleary. “Sarah and Katie are national-class distance runners and national-class students. We are very proud of them.”
Out of 99 honorees, the BIG EAST conference led with 16 student-athletes named to the list. Syracuse topped the conference with five, while Villanova had three.
The Mountaineers qualified two athletes to compete at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Ind., last November when Gillespie earned All-America honors with a 34th-place finish while Brault arrived in 71st place.
Gillespie, a Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, native, owns a 4.0 GPA and earned all-BIG EAST honors and all-Mid-Atlantic Region marks for her tenth-place finishes in those races. She also had two first-place finishes at the BIG EAST Preview (18:28) and Notre Dame Invitational (17:24) and arrived in 17th place at the prestigious Penn State National.
Brault, from Winnipeg, Manitoba, has a 3.96 GPA and was an all-Mid-Atlantic Region recipient following her 16th-place finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic regional. She also finished in 22nd place at the BIG EAST Championships and came in 11th place at the difficult Penn State National Open. She also came in second place at the Notre Dame Invitational, her best finish of the year.
To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have either earned USTFCCCA All-America status or finished in the NCAA region’s top 15 (or top 10 percent) in 2010.
