Gymnastics: Vault, Floor Retain Rankings

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Following a season-best performance at No. 15 Ohio State, the West Virginia gymnastics team retains its Top 20 vault and floor rankings in today’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers (6-4, 3-1 EAGL) hold steady at No. 19 on floor and No. 20 on vault. The rankings are based on their respective 48.746 and 48.818 event averages.
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer breaks into the beam rankings this week at No. 42 with a 9.779 average. The Cornwall, N.Y., native also is nationally ranked on vault and floor at No. 34 (9.836) and No. 44 (9.818), respectively.
WVU retains its Southeast regional rankings from one week ago. The squad ranks No. 4 (194.046) overall, No. 3 on vault and floor, No. 4 (48.404) on bars and No. 5 (48.079) on beam.
Sloanhoffer regionally ranks in the Top 10 on three events. She is No. 6 on vault, No. 10 on floor and No. 11 on beam.
Senior Amy Bieski matches Sloanhoffer’s three regional rankings. After scoring a season-high 39.2 at OSU, the Nanticoke, Pa., native moves up three spots to No. 8 (38.671) in the all-around. She also ranks No. 17 on vault (9.771) and bars (9.721).
Junior Tina Maloney joins Sloanhoffer and Bieski in the vault rankings and ranks No. 16 (9.775), while senior Emily Kerwin and junior Nicole Roach rank No. 16 (9.736) and No. 17 (9.721), respectively, on bars. Additionally, sophomore Kaylyn Millick ranks No. 12 (38.365) in the all-around.
WVU continues to rank No. 3 overall in the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL). The squad also is No. 2 on vault, bars and floor, and No. 4 on beam.
Sloanhoffer ranks No. 1 on vault for the fourth straight week; the rookie has earned a score of 9.8 or better on the apparatus in all but one meet this season. She also ranks No. 2 on beam and No. 4 on floor.
Bieski also ranks on three events – No. 5 all-around, N. 6 vault and No. 7 bars. Additionally, Maloney ranks No. 5 on vault, and Kerwin and Roach rank No. 6 and No. 7, respectively, on bars.
The Mountaineers are coming off a 195.6-195.1 loss at No. 15 OSU on Feb. 12. Though the team did not win an event, several student-athletes earned personal- and season-best scores. In addition to Bieski’s third place all-around finish, she also finished first on bars and second vault with season-high 9.8 and 9.875 scores, respectively. Sophomore Alaska Richardson tied Bieski on vault with a career-best mark. Sloanhoffer paced the team on beam, winning the event with a career-best 9.875, while Millick finished first on the team, second overall, on floor with a 9.85. Additionally, Richardson hit for a career-best 9.775 on floor, while sophomores Chelsea Goldschrafe (9.825) and Arlene Hathaway (9.725) earned a season- and career-best score, respectively, on beam.
The team returns to the WVU Coliseum after a two-week road trip and plays host to No. 1 Florida and EAGL foes New Hampshire and George Washington on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m. The quad-meet is a designated “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for $1 each.
