MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 1 West Virginia rifle team matched its nation record it set just six days ago and defeated No. 9 Nebraska, 4704-4596, this evening in an NCAA qualifying match at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Mountaineers’ (11-2, 5-1 GARC) team total is a collegiate record; the squad first shot the mark in its win over Columbus State on Feb. 6. Additionally, WVU swept the Huskers (4-9, 2-3 GARC) in both guns, winning air rifle, 2376-2330, and smallbore, 2328-2266.
Today’s win is the Mountaineers’ second over the Huskers this season, as they trumped NU, 4656-4592, on Nov. 21, in Morgantown. WVU also tallied a 4659-4612 win over NU in the 2010 NCAA qualifying match.
WVU’s air rifle total bests its previous school record of 2374. Seniors Nicco Campriani, Tommy Santelli and Andy Lamson, junior Justin Pentz and sophomore Petra Zublasing accounted for the record. Additionally, those five shooters are credited with the team’s aggregate record.
“This was a solid team performance today,” says coach Jon Hammond. “I’m really glad we shot 4700 again, but I know we have more in us. Overall, the team is shooting right where I want them to shoot and setting themselves up nicely for the remainder of the season.”
Campriani finished first overall with a combined score of 1183. The Florence, Italy, native also finished first in both guns, scoring 598 (100, 99, 99, 100, 100, 100) air rifle and 585 (196 standing, 193 standing, 196 kneeling) smallbore.
Pentz and Santelli tied for second place with 1174 scores; the mark is a season high for Pentz. Zublasing finished fourth overall with an 1173 aggregate score.
Katie Kostal paced NU with an 1155 combined score.
Pentz had a career day in air rifle, shooting a personal-best 595 and finishing behind Campriani. The DuBois, Pa., native has been building up to the score, as he shot 590 last Sunday. Santelli shot 592 and finished third, while Zublasing finished fourth (591) and Lamson placed fifth (588).
“Justin is shooting really well right now,” Hammond says. “I knew that once he shot 590 last week, he was capable of shooting an even better mark. I was happy to see him shoot a personal best today.”
Santelli and Zublasing each shot 582 smallbore and finished second overall. Pentz finished fourth with a 579 score, while senior Kyle Smith shot 577 and finished in fifth place.
WVU improves to 6-3 all-time against the Huskers.
Today’s qualifying scores will be added to the teams’ averages, with the top eight squads advancing to the NCAA Championships, March 11-12, in Columbus, Ga.
The Mountaineers will break for one week before shooting for their second straight conference title at the 2011 Great American Rifle Conference Championship, Feb. 26-27, in Oxford, Miss.
