Wrestling: Ohio Visits for Non-League Battle

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – Stepping out of Eastern Wrestling League play momentarily, the West Virginia wrestling team returns for its second home dual meet of the season as it faces Ohio on Saturday at 7 p.m. at the WVU Coliseum.
The Mountaineers (7-5, 3-1) will grapple with the Bobcats (9-4, 3-0 Mid-American Conference) for the 17th consecutive year before both teams resume conference action. WVU owns a 32-15-1 all-time series lead over Ohio, but the Bobcats won last year’s meet by a 27-15 score in St. Clairsville, Ohio.
“With as strong of a lineup as they have, they might be stronger than Pittsburgh,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “That’s a bit unusual, but they get some pretty good wrestlers from Ohio and Pennsylvania, arguably two of the strongest wrestling states in the country.”
In last year’s match, Ohio’s Gabe Ramos defeated WVU’s Shane Young by an 8-7 decision at 125 pounds while WVU’s Kyle Rooney upset the Bobcats’ No. 16-ranked Erik Schuth by a 7-6 score at 197 pounds. Both pairs are set to face each other again Saturday night.
Earlier this year, WVU’s redshirt senior Donnie Jones defeated Ohio’s Steve Wilson by a 9-3 decision at the Reno Tournament of Champions on Dec. 19. The duo is also slated to meet up for a second time on Saturday. Ohio’s 184-pound starter, Ryan Garringer, was defeated earlier this season in Reno by WVU’s Mac Mancuso by a 6-3 score.
At 141 pounds, WVU freshman Michael Morales will see his third consecutive ranked wrestler in Ohio’s No. 13 Germane Lindsey, while redshirt sophomore Alex Meade will square off with Ohio’s No. 16-ranked Nick Purdue. Heavyweight Philip Mandzik will have the challenge of wrestling the Bobcats’ No. 17 Jeremy Johnson.
“Their lineup has come together and it’s very formidable,” Turnbull says. “They recently beat 12th-ranked Central Michigan, so that says a lot about their talent. They’re probably favored in six of the matchups. The local community may not see it as a big matchup, but Ohio’s probably the favored team so we’re going to have to rise up and meet the challenge. Ohio will be a very difficult opponent.”
