Football: Three-Way Tie For Big East Title
December 03, 2011 04:37 PM | General
MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Cincinnati (9-3) defeated Connecticut 35-27 today to earn a share of the Big East regular season title with West Virginia and Louisville.
West Virginia (9-3) defeated South Florida 30-27 on Thursday night, while Louisville (7-5) wrapped up its regular season last week with a 34-24 victory over South Florida. All three ended the season with 5-2 Big East records.
West Virginia has now won outright or shared seven Big East titles since 1993.
Louisville was hoping for a Cincinnati loss today to finish tied with West Virginia and earn the league’s BCS bid because of the Cardinals' 38-35 victory over the Mountaineers in Morgantown on Nov. 5.
But because there was a three-way tie, West Virginia is likely to get the league’s BCS bowl spot because the Mountaineers should be the highest ranked Big East team when the final BCS standings are revealed tomorrow.
West Virginia is the only Big East team in this week’s BCS rankings at No. 23.
The probable Big East bowl scenario has West Virginia earning the BCS bid, possibly to the Orange Bowl to face the winner of tonight’s ACC championship game between Virginia Tech-Clemson, Notre Dame taking the Big East’s No. 2 bowl spot in the Champs Sports Bowl, the Belk and Liberty bowls choosing between Louisville and Cincinnati, Rutgers heading to the Pinstripe Bowl, and Pitt slotted for the Beef O’Brady’s Bowl.
Connecticut, USF and Syracuse failed to become bowl eligible this season.
Of course, all bowl invitations will become official tomorrow evening. Be sure to stop back at MSNsportsNET.com Sunday evening to get official bowl ticket and travel information.
