MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University novice rowing team is set to compete in its first competition of the season on Saturday, Nov. 5, at the Head of the Occoquan Regatta on the Occoquan River in Fairfax Station, Va.
“We are really looking forward to this first race,” says associate head coach Tina Griffith, who oversees the novice team. “Practices the past few days have been going really well and we are ready to see how we stack up against the competition. Since this is the first time almost all of these girls have raced, I am sure we will have some little things to deal with, but overall I am expecting a smooth and successful experience.”
The Mountaineers have four entries in this year’s regatta with two boats set for competition in the women’s Novice 4+ event and two boats set for competition in the women’s Novice 8+ event.
Last year, WVU’s Novice 4+ ‘A’ crew finished the course with a time of 21:40.57 to earn a third-place finish behind Georgetown ‘A’ (20:13.52) and Georgetown ‘B’ (20:30.05).This result was followed by the West Virginia ‘B’ crew placing in seventh (22:43.72) and the ‘C’ crew placing in 16th (25:44.43) out of 26 teams overall.
In last year’s women’s Novice 8+ competition, the West Virginia ‘A’ crew finished 10th with a time of 20:40.39, while the ‘B’ crew finished with a time of 22:01.42 to place 16th out of 25 teams overall.
“Coach Griffith always has our novices as prepared as they can be for their first race as Mountaineers,” says coach Jimmy King. “The Occoquan is where our novice squad typically dons the Flying WV for the first time in competition and we fully expect they will represent WVU very well this weekend.”
The Mountaineers will close out their fall season on Nov. 12, when they travel to Philadelphia, Pa., to compete in the Philadelphia Frostbite Regatta.
