BIG EAST CHAMPIONSHIP BRACKETMORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The No. 11 West Virginia women’s soccer team will play host to Georgetown on Friday, Nov. 4, at 5:30 p.m., in the semifinals of the BIG EAST Women’s Soccer Championship at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
The other side of the championship bracket features Louisville and Notre Dame, who play in the first semifinal game on Friday at 3 p.m. Semifinal winners will meet in the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 6, at noon.
“We are excited to host this weekend’s championship and both semifinal matches will showcase very good soccer,” says WVU coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “Both games are rematches of the regular season, and fans will definitely get their money’s worth.”
All three championship matches will be broadcast live on CBS Sports Network with Eric Frede and Tammy Blackburn calling the action. CBS Sports Network in the Morgantown area is found on Comcast [channel 288 and 854 (HD)], DirectTV (channel 613) and Dish Network (channel 152).
West Virginia is coming off a 5-0 win over Seton Hall in the BIG EAST quarterfinals last weekend to improve its record to 15-4-0. Five different Mountaineers scored, led by senior Blake Miller’s one goal, two assist afternoon. The Mountaineers have won 13 of their last 14 matches, including eight straight at home.
WVU is the defending BIG EAST champion and is hosting the conference tournament for the second time. All four teams competing this weekend participated in the 2007 championship in Morgantown.
“We are trying to approach the weekend like we would any other,” says Izzo-Brown of the pressure of hosting. “Every game is important, and Friday is no different. Sure, teams will want to beat us on our home field. But in the end, all four teams are battling to win a championship.”
The Mountaineers are 14-8-4 all-time in BIG EAST Championship matches and have never faced Georgetown in BIG EAST tournament play. The two teams met earlier this season with a 3-1 WVU victory in the Nation’s Capital on Sept. 30.
Georgetown is led by eighth-year coach Dave Nolan, who led the 2010 Hoyas to an Elite Eight appearance. The Hoyas finished second in the league’s National Division and sport an overall record of 15-5-0.
All-America midfielder Ingrid Wells leads the team with 30 points on nine goals and a team-best 12 assists. Forwards Camille Trujillo and Daphne Corboz each have double-digit goals with 12 and 10, respectively.
In goal, Elizabeth Hanna has an 11-4-0 record in 19 appearances, allowing 20 goals and making 56 saves.
“Georgetown has some special players, and it’s going to be a tight match,” says Izzo-Brown. “Both teams are going to try and implement their game plan early into the match. And the one that executes it the best will likely win.”
The Hoyas have yet to be shutout this season, including a contest at Stanford - the nation’s current No. 1 team.
Spectators attending the BIG EAST women's soccer semifinal games at Dick Dlesk on Friday will be given a parking pass and allowed to park for free in the Natatorium parking lot, but must leave at the conclusion of the second game. Those attending the soccer games are asked to enter the Natatorium parking lot off Monongahela Blvd.
Ticket prices are $5 for adults (19 & older) and $3 for youth (18 & younger), and all BIG EAST students can attend for free with a valid student ID.
