HUNTINGTON, W. Va. – The West Virginia volleyball team fell in its last match of the 2011 season to Marshall 3-1 (19-25, 27-25, 22-25, 23-25) tonight at the Cam Henderson Center.
West Virginia (7-19, 5-9 BIG EAST) battled and split the first two sets with the Thundering Herd (10-21, 8-12 CUSA) before dropping the next two.
“This was a great match to be a part of and it was hard fought on both sides,” coach Jill Kramer says. “The defensive efforts from both teams were really good and there was a lot of great defense played tonight. The seniors did a great job in the last match of their careers here at West Virginia. They kept themselves really composed throughout the match and fought really hard. Any West Virginia fan would have been proud to watch them play tonight.
“It is really tough to leave Huntington without the Gold Ball and we are looking forward to trying again next year.”
The Mountaineers began set one with a 9-4 deficit before a kill by senior Kari Post broke the Thundering Herd’s run. WVU closed the gap with kills from senior outside hitters Michelle Kopecky and Kylie Armbruster and pulled the match within one at 19-18. Marshall responded by taking six of the next seven points to take the first set 25-19.
After losing the first set, WVU took seven of the first 10 points in the second set to force an early Thundering Herd timeout. After the timeout, Marshall came back to tie the match at 13-13 with kills from Abby Tomas and Desirre Wilkerson. The teams traded points until 25-25 when the Mountaineers used a kill from Armbruster and an error by the Thundering Herd and to take the second set and tie the match 1-1.
With the match tied, the teams started the third set with a 4-4 tie before Marshall surged ahead off of two straight service aces. After calling a timeout, WVU attempted to gain an advantage but could not get any closer than three as the Thundering Herd took the third set 25-22.
WVU began set four with a 6-2 lead to force a Marshall timeout before the Thundering Herd rallied back to tie the match at 14-14. The teams continued to trade points and tied the score seven more times. At 23-23, Marshall used a WVU error and a kill from Tomas to take the set and the match.
Kopecky finished with a season and career-high 23 kills while Armbruster recorded a double-double with 12 kills and 17 digs.
Post and senior libero Serinna Russo each finished the season in the WVU record book. By recording 45 assists tonight, Post has accrued 3,384 assists in her career which puts her at No. 3 on the all-time assists list. Russo recorded 27 digs and finishes the season with 530 digs which is good for No. 3 on total digs in a single-season.
The Mountaineers have now completed the 2011 season.
