MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Throughout the 2012 preseason, the West Virginia University gymnastics team and staff will periodically check in with Mountaineer fans, providing updates on the progress made in Cary Gym and the weight room. The team also will share stories from its multiple team-bonding trips and activities.
This year’s 11th tale comes from senior Nicole Roach. The South Lyon, Mich., native recaps the team’s 2011 Turkey-Indian intrasquad in her second Tumblers’ Tale entry of the season.
It is so hard to believe that Thanksgiving break is here! The team has put in many long hours in the gym and weight room, working on new skills and routines and also gaining strength to get us through the 2012 season.
We recently had our annual Turkey-Indian intrasquad to showcase what we have all been working so hard for. The team was divided in half, and each group dressed up. It’s always a fun experience, and we all took many pictures. This intrasquad also allows us to try new routines and skills, to gain confidence in ourselves and our teammates and to see what we need to work on before the season really gets under way.
Everyone did really well at this year’s Turkey-Indian intrasquad which is very exciting and makes us hopeful for this season! Beth Deal did great on the two events she showed. She has made very quick progress on a new vault and is pushing herself to get it on the hard mat, which looks promising. The other event she showed was beam, which was another solid performance.
Hope Sloanhoffer also did extremely well. She showed all four events and just like last year is very consistent. All the girls that competed did great, and it was nice to see the work that we have been putting in at the gym is paying off in some of the scores that we received.
We had a few mistakes at the meet, but the wobbles and falls are something that we can easily fix. I think that the Turkey-Indian intrasquad is a good meet for us to get all of our jitters out and to show us that we can be great. The girls understand that we have good routines and that we just need to have more confidence and not hold back. Now, we just need to fight for every 0.1 of a point and work on our form and landings. If we continue to push ourselves and each other, we will continue to get better.
I am very excited to see how everyone continues to improve and contribute to the team effort. We have a lot of talent and potential on this team to make it far this season. We hope to see you all in January!
