MORGANTOWN, W. Va. - Junior center and co-captain Asya Bussie led the West Virginia women’s basketball team to a 100-23 win over Wheeling Jesuit in an exhibition game at the Coliseum on Wednesday night.
Bussie paced the team in scoring, posting 23 points on 11-of-14 shooting and pulling down five boards in only 20 minutes of play. Sophomore guard Taylor Palmer and sophomore forward Jess Harlee also had double-digit scoring performances with 19 and 11 points on the night, respectively, and redshirt-sophomore guard Christal Caldwell chipped in another 15 points off the bench.
“I thought at one period there our guards did a great job of getting it inside with the lobs and that type of stuff,” said coach Mike Carey. “We have to look for the triple threat inside because the inside is our strength this year.”
West Virginia scored nearly half of its point total from forcing and capitalizing on 40 Cardinal turnovers, while limiting their own to 14. Harlee led the team’s stealing efforts, with seven of WVU’s 25 steals.
WVU also pulled down 49 rebounds, with Palmer leading the team’s efforts with eight.
Additionally, the Mountaineers held Wheeling Jesuit to just 18.4 percent (7-of-38) from the field, while they improved on their own shooting from 55.3 percent (21-of-38) in the first half to 60 percent (21-of-35) in the second.
“I thought overall our girls played hard,” Carey said. “I thought we got in the passing lane. We are very young and we are going to make mistakes. Even our freshmen came in and played hard.”
The Mountaineers open regular-season play at home against Youngstown State on Friday, Nov. 11. The game is the first of a double-header with the men’s team, with tipoff set for 6:30 p.m. The game will broadcast live on ESPN3.
