MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia men’s soccer team will travel to College Park, Md., to take on No. 5 Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 20, at 5 p.m.
"Maryland's very much like ourselves – very athletic, up-tempo," coach Marlon LeBlanc says. "They are one of the best teams in America right now. They play in front of 4,000 to 6,000 people regularly. There will be no fear in our team. We've had West Virginia teams win at Maryland before though.”
WVU is coming off a thrilling 2-1 overtime victory over No. 25 Xavier in first round action on Thursday night. Jay Williams scored his first career goal in the first half, while a Xavier goal in the 85th minute knotted the score at 1-1. In the 99th minute of overtime Williams was fouled to set up a free kick. Allan Flott placed the kick right on the head of a diving Eric Schoenle, who placed the ball off the post and into the back of the net.
Maryland earned a first round bye after being awarded the No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament. This is the Terrapins 11th straight NCAA postseason appearance and are looking to advance to the third round for the 10th straight season.
Maryland is 0-2-2 in its last four games and was last in action on Nov. 8, with Boston College winning 2-1 in the ACC Quarterfinals.
The Terrapins are out-scoring opponent 42-18, as well as taking 137 shots to 67.
John Stertzer and Casey Townsend lead the offensive attack with 14 goals and 13 goals, respectively, while Patrick Mullins has tacked on six goals. Sunny Jane leads the squad with six assists.
Will Swaim has started 17 games in net with a 1.02 goals-against average and a record of 12-3-2. Swaim has allowed 18 goals, while making 45 saves.
The two teams played earlier in the regular season with Maryland winning 3-1 after WVU’s Andy Bevin scored a goal early in the first half to open the scoring. The all-time series is tied at 2-2-0.
The winner of the match moves on to the third round to play the winner of Bradley/Louisville on Sunday, Nov. 27, at a time and location to be determined.
