MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia volleyball team is set to continue BIG EAST competition as it plays host to DePaul and Notre Dame this weekend.
The Mountaineers will face the Blue Demons, Friday, at 7 p.m., and will return to action, Sunday, to take on the Fighting Irish at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The match against DePaul on Friday is the team’s Dig Pink match and all fans are encouraged to wear pink in support of Breast Cancer Awareness. WVU will also host a free Kids’ Clinic following its match against Notre Dame on Sunday for all kids eighth grade and younger.
WVU is now 3-12, 1-3 on the season after going 0-2 last weekend at Villanova and Georgetown. The Mountaineers were swept by both the Wildcats (0-3) and the Hoyas (0-3).
Senior outside hitter Michelle Kopecky led the team with 21 kills, 3.50 kills per set and two service aces last weekend. The Schaumburg, Ill., native leads the team with 128 kills and 18 service aces. Senior setter Kari Post recorded her sixth double-double of the season against Villanova by posting 22 assists and 10 digs. Post leads the team with 406 assists and is second on the team in digs with 140.
“Obviously we have got to come out strong regardless of who are opponent is and we are going to see two pretty different ones this weekend,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We will start out with DePaul who is like us in that they are trying to find their way and struggling a little bit offensively. We are going to have a great match planned against them and we are going to focus on them first.
“Notre Dame has lost three at home in a row and they are going out on the road looking for some wins and they are going to fight hard. Regardless of who we are playing, we have got to focus on doing some things better, cleaning up our game and making more positive play and so that is going to be our focus.”
DePaul is 4-13, 1-3 on the season after being swept by both Louisville and Cincinnati last weekend. The Blue Demons are led by freshman Amy Lanski who has recorded 179 kills and 3.03 kills per set and junior Kelsey Bowler who has chipped in 237 digs and nine service aces.
The Mountaineers hold a 5-3 advantage over DePaul after sweeping the Blue Demons 3-0 the past two years.
With a league record of 1-3, Notre Dame has fallen under .500 in league play for the first time since joining the BIG EAST in 1995. Preseason all-BIG EAST selection Andrea McHugh leads the Fighting Irish (8-6) with 164 kills and is second on the team in digs with 175. Freshman Jeni Houser led the team last weekend with 23 kills and is currently third on the team in total blocks with 35.
Notre Dame holds a 15-3 advantage over the Mountaineers in the all-time series. WVU has not beaten the Fighting Irish since 1998 when the Mountaineers swept Notre Dame 3-0.
