Rowing: WVU Travels to Philadelphia

MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University rowing team is set to travel to the Head of the Schuylkill Regatta on the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, Pa., on Saturday, Oct. 29.
“We're eager to compete at the Head of the Schuylkill where we'll race against some very competitive programs,” says coach Jimmy King. “This weekend’s racing is an opportunity both for individuals within our program to show the progress they have been making this fall as well as for our program as a whole.”
The Mountaineers have four entries in this year’s regatta. Three boats will be competing in the women’s open four competition and one boat will be competing in the championship eight competition.
Last year, West Virginia placed well with two women’s open fours placing within the top seven of 34 teams.
The ‘A’ boat of Jenelle Spencer, Hilary Meale, Rachelle Purych, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Sarah Cartwright placed fifth with a time of 17:00.54, while the ‘B’ boat of Danielle Widecrantz, Jessica Kelly, Alita Meyers, Karen Verwey and coxswain Morgan Leach placed seventh, crossing the line in 17:08.19.
In addition, the women’s Varsity 8+ took seventh out of 21 entries. The ‘A’ boat of Purych, Meyers, Kelly, Shannon Gribbons, Rachel Viglianco, Jeannine McCarty, Verwey, Courtney Schrand and coxswain Anastasia DuPont finished the course in 15:51.53.
Key Mountaineer returners for this year’s regatta include rowers Spencer, Meale, Purych, Schrand, Widecrantz, Kelly, and Verwey with Cartwright and Leach returning as coxswains.
“There is a concern regarding the regatta day weather forecast,” King adds. “With temperatures dropping and winds increasing through the course of the day, the regatta has already communicated that there may be changes including possible cancellations to parts of the race schedule.”
The Head of the Schuylkill is one of the fall’s largest regattas, with an estimated 5,800 athletes expected to participate in this weekend’s racing.
The event marks the third of five fall regattas for the Mountaineers. The team next travels to the Head of the Occoquan on the Occoquan River in Fairfax Station, Va., on Saturday, Nov. 5.
