MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two goals from Providence’s Marc Cintron led Providence to a 2-1 victory over No. 14 West Virginia’s men’s soccer team on Senior Day on Friday evening in the home regular season finale at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
Cintron scored the first goal of the match in the 26th minute after Thomas Ballenthin played a ball from the left side of the field to Cintron in the middle. Cintron took a shot from 15 yards out that went to the right of WVU keeper Justin Holmes.
Cintron then scored the game-winning goal in the 87th minute on a shot from 25 yards out inside the near post by a diving Holmes after Cintron received a pass from Fazal Nabi.
Senior forward Nick Claudio netted his first career score for the Mountaineers in the 46th minute to the game at 1-1 with a blast from 30 yards out. Forward Peabo Doue sent a pass to midfielder Uwem Etuk on the left side of the field. Etuk then sent a ball towards the center of the field to Claudio who flicked it up and sent a volley into the top right corner of the net.
WVU (8-6-1) finished with the shot (10-9) and corner kick (6-2) advantages, while both teams recorded 14 fouls.
The game was played in the majority of the midfield in the first half with each team taking four shots, while both teams had numerous opportunities in the second half.
Doue had an excellent opportunity in the 62nd minute on a header that went wide off a corner kick from midfielder Travis Pittman.
Providence’s Daniel Fabian sent a cross Marcos Ugarte four minutes later who hit a soft header into the arms of Holmes.
WVU had its best non-goal opportunity of the half in the 68th minute after forward Andy Bevin picked up a loose ball and had a one-on-one chance with Providence keeper Jhojan Obando. Bevin sent the ball across the field to midfielder Ruben Garrido who was unable to reach the pass for the one-timer.
Bevin started another chance on a free kick from 30 yards out in the 74th minute to the head of forward Franck Tayou who had his shot blocked for a Mountaineer corner kick.
Ugarte nearly gave the Friars a lead in the 79th minute when he received a through ball that went past the WVU defense and Ugarte sent a shot over the net.
Cintron led all players with four shots, two on-goal, while Pittman and Claudio each took two for the Mountaineers. Holmes recorded three saves for WVU and Obando made one save in the victory for Providence.
