MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The West Virginia University volleyball team is set to travel to BIG EAST foes Louisville and Cincinnati.
The Mountaineers (5-13, 3-4) will start in Louisville, playing the Cardinals (15-5, 7-0) at 2 p.m. on Oct. 22 before traveling to Cincinnati to take on the Bearcats (14-8, 5-2) on Oct. 23 at 2 p.m.
Senior libero Serinna Russo was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll this week after recording 33 digs and 6.60 digs per set as the Mountaineers defeated Pitt 3-2 for the second year in a row and only the third time in program history. As a team, WVU recorded a match and season-high 100 digs in the match.
Senior setter Kari Post also had a strong weekend against Pitt. The Yuba City, Calif., native recorded her seventh double-double of the season with 39 assists and 10 digs. Post currently has 44 double-doubles in her career.
“One of our big goals for the weekend is to keep the momentum that we have throughout the road trip to Louisville and Cincinnati,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We are going on the road and playing two of the top teams in our conference. Cincinnati is the highest rated RPI team in our league with 28 right now and Louisville is third at 41. Nationally they are really competitive.
“We are looking forward to bringing Courtney (Robison) back to Louisville and playing in front of a sold out crowd in Cardinal Arena. We got into a really close match with Cincinnati last year and lost 15-10 in the fifth and we know that we can definitely push them. Our number one goal is to keep our momentum going forward into the BIG EAST tournament and keep playing our best volleyball.”
Louisville is the three-time reigning BIG EAST tournament champions and one of only two teams still undefeated in BIG EAST play. The Cardinals swept Cincinnati last weekend before falling to Lipscomb 3-1 on Tuesday. Louisville is led by junior Lola Arslanbekova who was named BIG EAST Preseason Player of the Year and is No. 2 in the nation and No. 1 in the BIG EAST with 5.10 kills per set.
Last year, the Cardinals swept the Mountaineers in Morgantown, W. Va., and currently hold a 7-0 advantage over WVU.
After the loss to Louisville, the Bearcats bounced back with a five-set victory over Western Kentucky on Tuesday. Cincinnati was led by unanimous Preseason all-BIG EAST team selection Jordanne Scott who had a match-high 18 kills and only three errors for a .455 hitting percentage.
At the WVU Coliseum last year, the Bearcats narrowly pulled out a five-set win over the Mountaineers to take an 11-2 advantage in the all-time series record.
