MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Two goals and two assists from Katie Ryan propelled Villanova to a 4-1 win over No. 21 West Virginia on a rainy and muddy field Sunday afternoon at West Campus Complex in Villanova, Pa. The loss snapped the Mountaineers’ seven-match win streak, and handed WVU its first BIG EAST Conference loss.
Trailing 2-1, West Virginia defender Meghan Lewis was issued a red car after pulling Ryan down on a scoring opportunity outside the box in the 34th minute. WVU was forced to play a man down for the first time in program history.
“I’m proud of the effort we gave in playing in some tough conditions, playing a man down and being on the wrong end of some interesting calls,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “We’ll go home and get back after it in practice, and begin preparations for St. John’s and Syracuse.”
The Wildcats (6-6-2, 2-4-0) capitalized on the extra player, extending its lead to 3-1 in the 48th minute behind Heidi Sabatura’s eighth goal of the season. Sabatura one-timed a shot into the net on a pass from Ryan.
Nova’s Stephanie Myers completed the scoring as the Mountaineers (9-4-0, 5-1-0) changed formations to try and generate some offense in the second half. Myers lifted a shot to the right corner from 16 yards out to make it 4-1.
West Virginia took an early 1-0 lead as defender Erica Henderson won a scramble in the box, slotting a ball into the back of the net in the seventh minute on a short pass from senior Drea Barklage. Henderson’s goal was the second of the season for the senior, which came off a corner kick set up by a Mallory Smith shot that was deflected out of bounds.
Ryan tied the match on a shot off the right post in the 19th minute, and scored the game-winner in the 22nd minute on a breakaway up the middle.
WVU goalkeeper Sara Keane came up with a big save in the 38th minute to keep it a one-goal match. Ryan attempted one of her game-high six shots that was denied by Keane on a sharp liner to her left.
The Mountaineers were aggressive to start the second half, which led to a free kick opportunity in the 51st minute. Forward Kate Schwindel was taken down outside the box on the left side by a Villanova defender. Forward Frances Silva took the ensuing shot in traffic that was knocked down and corralled by goalkeeper Jami Kranich.
Villanova had a scoring opportunity in the 55th minute on a header from Erin Ryan that was taken out of the air by Keane in the middle of the box.
Blake Miller tried to narrow the deficit with a shot over the crossbar on WVU’s 13th shot of the match in the 73rd minute.
Villanova committed twice as many fouls as West Virginia with 17, in addition to two yellow cards. The Wildcats held a 19-16 shot advantage, and both goalkeepers made six saves.
The Mountaineers return home next weekend for a pair of conference matches against St. John’s and Syracuse.
