WASHINGTON – After taking an 18-15 advantage in the first set, the West Virginia University volleyball team could not hold onto the lead as Georgetown took the first set and ultimately the match 3-0 (26-28, 23-25, 23-25).
The Mountaineers (3-12, 1-3) only hit .171 as the Hoyas (9-8, 1-3) recorded eight total blocks in the match.
The Hoyas used a service error by the Mountaineers to start a 3-0 run to tie the first set at 18-18. After Georgetown took a 22-19 advantage, WVU called a timeout and responded with a kill and service ace from freshman middle blocker Evyn McCoy to pull the match even at 23-23. The teams traded points until a kill from Dani White and an attack error from WVU ended the set 28-26.
Georgetown took a 6-3 lead to start the second set before a 7-4 run by the Mountaineers put the match even at 10-10. Down 20-13, senior Kylie Armbruster came in and posted two kills for the team as WVU closed the gap 24-23. The Mountaineers could not hold off the Hoyas as Georgetown recorded a block on the following point to take the set 25-23.
Down two sets, WVU took control of the first part of the set with three kills from McCoy, Armbruster and freshman outside hitter Halle Kearney before the Hoyas pulled the match even with three straight errors from the Mountaineers. The teams continued to trade points the rest of the set before two straight WVU errors put the Hoyas up 22-20. After a timeout, the Mountaineers recorded three straight kills from Armbruster, Kearney and senior middle blocker Abby Monson to take a 23-22 advantage. The Hoyas would not stop as they used two kills and a WVU error to take the set 25-23.
Senior Michelle Kopecky led the Mountaineers with 10 kills, while Kearney chipped in nine.
“I think we definitely had some highlights this match and we improved in certain areas,” coach Jill Kramer says. “We are lacking in the fundamentals of the game and especially serving. There has only been a couple of times this season where we actually put away more balls then our opponent and this time we did that, but we also had more errors. We are still working on cutting that down and we are looking ahead to DePaul and Notre Dame this weekend and getting back in the gym and working hard to take two matches at the Coliseum.”
WVU returns to action next weekend as the team will play host to DePaul and Notre Dame. The Mountaineers will take on the Blue Demons Friday, Oct. 7 at 7 p.m. and will face the Irish Sunday, Oct. 9 at 1 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum.
