Wrestling: Five WVU Grapplers Ranked

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Five members of the West Virginia wrestling team earned a preseason ranking from Gregg Henry/WrestingReport.com’s Division I preseason rankings, which were released on Tuesday morning.
Junior Shane Young (125), redshirt junior Colin Johnston (133), redshirt sophomore Nathan Pennesi (141), redshirt senior Matt Ryan (184) and Brandon Williamson (HWT) each were in the preseason rankings.
Young (No. 20) returns to the Mountaineers after qualifying for the NCAA Championships and posting a 28-10 overall record for the Mountaineers last season.
Johnston (No. 14) redshirted last season due to injury, but finished 2009-10 with a 21-4 record overall along with being ranked in the top 20 for the majority of the season.
As for Pennesi (No. 24), he will be making the jump from the 133 pounds to 141 pounds this year. At the 133 pound division, Pennesi qualified for the NCAA Championships and had a 24-8 overall record.
Ryan (No. 24) also qualified for the NCAA Championships last season and made it the furthest of any Mountaineer at the tournament, as he advanced to the round of 12. Ryan posted a 22-9 overall record in 2010-11.
Williamson (No. 11) redshirted last season due to injury as well and is looking to return to the form that saw him post a 20-9 overall record and earn a spot in the 2009-10 NCAA Championships.
WVU’s season will begin on Nov. 6 when it travels to College Park, Md., for the University of Maryland Duals.
