MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The West Virginia University track and field team enters the 2010-11 indoor season with a No. 8 preseason ranking the United States Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association announced on Wednesday.
“Early season rankings are a testament to how a team performed last year at the national championships,” coach Sean Cleary says. “Finishing 10th last year has set the bar very high for this team. With that said, it is far too early for us to have a good handle on where we are at this point. Our very best kids won’t get going for another month. For now, we will simply stick to our plan and with a little luck, keep our kids healthy and free from injury.”
The Mountaineers are the top BIG EAST team in the poll and earned the No. 8 ranking with 84.74 points. Oregon took the top spot, followed by Texas A&M, LSU, Tennessee, Clemson, Arkansas and Auburn. Southern Illinois and Oklahoma then round out the Top 10.
Other BIG EAST teams ranked include Villanova at No. 11, Louisville at No. 18 and Georgetown at No. 22.
WVU continues action this weekend with a trip to the Penn State Relays on Saturday, Jan. 8, in University Park, Pa.
