MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – With the start of the 2011 season quickly approaching, West Virginia officials are planning several promotional days this winter for the Mountaineer gymnastics team.
The squad’s home season opener against Michigan State at the WVU Coliseum on Friday, Jan. 14, at 7:30 p.m., will mark the program’s first-ever “Beauty and the Beast” meet. The wrestling team also will open its home season against the Spartans and will compete simultaneously, providing fans the opportunity to watch two Mountaineer teams at once.
The “Beauty and the Beast” meet also is the first of two designated “Dollar Days.” All tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas are available for purchase for just one dollar.
WVU’s second “Dollar Day” is on Sunday, Feb. 20, at 1 p.m., against preseason ranked No. 3 Florida, New Hampshire and George Washington.
WVU’s final home match on Saturday, March 12, at 7 p.m., against No. 14 Penn State will serve as “Senior Day” for six Mountaineers – Amy Bieski, Naja Johnson, Stephanie Keaton, Emily Kerwin, Faye Meaden and Alysha Pretzello.
The Mountaineers will continue to meet with fans during “Chalk Talk” after every home meet in the Jerry West Lounge.
WVU returns 10 letterwinners from last season’s squad that finished 19-9 and advanced to its 27th NCAA Regional Championships. Coach Linda Burdette-Good returns for her 37th season with a 631-253-4 career record.
The Mountaineers open their 2011 slate on Friday, Jan. 7, against No. 13 Missouri at the Cancun Classic, in Cancun, Mexico, at 7 p.m. EST.
