WVU Earns Pair of Wins

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – In control the entire meet, the West Virginia gymnastics team recorded a season-best floor score and scored 194.075 total points to defeat East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) foes Rutgers and Pitt this evening at the WVU Coliseum.
The Scarlet Knights (8-4, 2-4 EAGL) finished in second place with a 191.15 score, while the Panthers (2-3, 0-3 EAGL) scored 189.025 and finished in third.
The Mountaineers (4-2, 2-1 EAGL) swept the competition on all four events, and with the victory already in their grasp, punctuated their win with a season-best 49.225 floor showing in the fourth rotation.
Senior Amy Bieski and sophomore Kaylyn Millick each scored 38.425 points and tied for second place overall. Combined, the duo accounted for two event wins, with Millick capturing first place on floor with a career-best 9.9 score, and Bieski finishing in a five-way tie for first on vault with 9.8 points. Tonight’s winning floor score marks the first time Millick has ever earned 9.9 points on any event.
RU’s Luisa Leal-Restrepo finished first with a score of 38.85.
With tonight’s score, Bieski’s career point total now stands at 1,668.2. The Nanticoke, Pa., native passes TeShawne Jackson (2000-03, 1,636.95) and now ranks 11th on the WVU all-time career points list.
The Mountaineers used a trio of 9.8 vaults to earn a 48.8 team score in the first rotation, giving them a lead they would never relinquish. Pitt scored 47.575 on bars, while RU tallied 46.925 on beam.
The back end of WVU’s vault lineup earned identical 9.8 scores, with freshman Hope Sloanhoffer, junior Tina Maloney and Bieski all finishing in first place; Leal-Restrepo and the Panthers’ Molly Moyer also finished first. Senior Emily Kerwin and Millick opened the lineup with 9.7 scores and tied for eighth place with the meet’s third-best mark.
The Mountaineers increased their lead to 2.45 points in the second rotation, as they scored 48.675 on bars and pushed their team total to 97.475. RU (95.025) jumped Pitt (93.525), scoring 48.1 on floor while the Panthers tallied 45.95 on beam.
Building on the career numbers she matched last week, Kerwin set a personal best this evening, winning bars with a 9.825 score. The Central, S.C., native previously scored 9.8 on Jan. 17 and Jan. 21. Junior Nicole Roach finished second with a 9.775, while Bieski tallied 9.725 and finished in third place.
Despite a few falls, the Mountaineers retained their advantage in the third rotation, as their team total stood at 144.85 after a 47.375 showing on beam. RU remained in second (143.6) following a 48.575 vault lineup. Pitt ranked third (140.7) and scored 47.175 on floor.
Sloanhoffer anchored WVU’s lineup with a winning 9.8 score; the Cornwall, N.Y., native has tallied 9.8 points or better on the apparatus four times this season. Roach finished second overall with a season-best 9.775 mark, while sophomore Arlene Hathaway finished third on the team, fourth overall, with a career-best 9.65 showing.
WVU rebounded from beam and concluded the meet with its season-best floor rotation. Rutgers closed out with a 47.55 bars showing, while Pitt tallied 48.325 on vault.
