MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – The West Virginia University tennis team will play host to James Madison and Liberty on Jan. 29-30, at the Greenbrier Resort in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va.
“I hope that everyone competes and walks onto the court not hoping, but expecting to win this weekend,” says coach Tina Samara. “They had a good week of practice and I think they are ready to go.”
The Mountaineers will go up against the Dukes on Saturday at 2 p.m., followed by a 9 a.m., match against the Lady Flames on Sunday.
WVU finished 1-2 last weekend, after falling to Bowling Green (1-6) on Saturday and Louisville (0-7) on Sunday, in Louisville, Ky. The Mountaineers bounced back on Monday, as they defeated Morehead State, 4-0, before terminating the remainder of the match.
Junior Veronica Cardenas led the team with solid wins in the singles and doubles competitions.
In doubles, Cardenas paired up with freshman Mary Chupa in the No. 1 spot, in which the duo defeated the Eagles’ Madeleinne Antero and Lauren Delaney, 8-1. Cardenas finished the day with a 6-0, 6-0 victory in No. 3 singles spot.
