MORGANTOWN, W. Va. -- Looking to keep its streak alive in the Eastern Wrestling League, the West Virginia wrestling team will look to improve its 2-0 conference record as it heads to Lock Haven to compete against the Bald Eagles on Saturday at 7 p.m.
The Bald Eagles are 5-7 on the year and 1-2 in EWL action so far this season after losing to Edinboro by a small margin last weekend then defeating Cleveland State, 21-18. They are led by No. 33-ranked Nick Hyatt at 125 pounds and No. 17 junior Matt Bonson at 141 pounds. Hyatt is 14-6 on the year while Bonson owns an 18-2 mark.
“We don’t see them at all during the year, so I don’t have a good handle on their team,” says WVU coach Craig Turnbull. “Their first three weights are very competitive and we’ve seen them in previous years. It will be a very good challenge for our first three weights.”
At 125 pounds, WVU sophomore Shane Young defeated Hyatt by a 4-0 decision score last season. The Mountaineers’ No. 12-ranked redshirt freshman Nathan Pennesi (133) will face the challenge of going up against the Bald Eagles’ John Trumbetti, last year’s EWL champion, who holds a 12-4 record this season. Pennesi is 19-4 going into the match and his four losses are to ranked opponents.
Four other Mountaineers find themselves ranked as Young is at No. 19, redshirt senior Brandon Rader (149) is No. 29, redshirt senior Donnie Jones (165) enters the rankings at No. 25, while redshirt junior Matt Ryan (184) is No. 23 with a 14-4 record on the year.
Rader will face Bald Eagle senior Owen Wilkinson, who recently defeated Edinboro’s No. 17-ranked Torsten Gillespie.
“We take each match exactly the same, whether it’s Clarion or Illinois or anyone in the league,” Turnbull says. “We will need to wrestle to our potential because they will be excited up in their gym. We expect a good challenge.”
The Mountaineers defeated Lock Haven last year at the WVU Coliseum by a 32-12 score and hold an 18-14 edge in the all-time series. The Bald Eagles last beat WVU in 2005.
