MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Nicco Campriani shot three individual school records and contributed to a team record to help lead the No. 1-ranked West Virginia rifle team past No. 2 Alaska-Fairbanks, 4696-4646, this evening, at the WVU Rifle Range.
The Florence, Italy, native had a collegiate career day, shooting a perfect 600 air rifle score and 590 smallbore for a school-record 1190 aggregate score. Campriani’s air rifle mark ties a world record, though he does not earn credit for the tie as he did not shoot it at an international competition. The reigning air rifle world champion, he is only the second NCAA shooter to ever shoot a perfect score, as UAF’s Matt Rawlings first attained the mark on Dec. 2, 2005. Additionally, his winning aggregate score also is a nation-best mark.
Campriani’s third individual record came during the smallbore relay, as he shot a 198 standing.
“Nicco had an amazing day,”’ says fifth-year coach Jon Hammond. “Lately, he has been working on a few things in the range and was not shooting the scores he desired. Today’s result is great for him and shows that his work is paying off.”
The Mountaineers (9-1, 5-0 GARC) swept the Nanooks (6-3), defeating the visiting squad in air rifle, 2374-2333, and smallbore, 2322-2313. WVU’s winning air rifle total matches the school record the squad first achieved last Saturday in its win over Akron. Also of note, the Mountaineers’ team aggregate total was one shot short of the school record.
“Any day you defeat Alaska, one of the nation’s top teams, by 50 points is a good day,” Hammond says. “We were four shots away from 4700, and it’s still a team goal to attain that score. We know we left a few points out there, but we’re on pace for where we want to be.”
Sophomore Petra Zublasing finished behind Campriani with an 1174 combined score, while junior Justin Pentz shot 1169 and finished in third place.
UAF’s Anna Hjelmevoll shot 1168 and tied WVU senior Andy Lamson for fourth place; the mark is a season best for Lamson.
Zublasing and senior Tommy Santelli shot 592 air rifle and tied for second place, while Hjelmevoll shot 591 for fourth place. Lamson and junior Michael Kulbacki tied for fifth place and shot 590; the mark was Lamson’s second season high of the day. Additionally, Pentz finished seventh overall with a personal-best 589 score.
Campriani, Zublasing, Santelli, Lamson and Kulbacki composed the Mountaineers’ air rifle counting team today and will be credited with the school record. Though only four scores go toward the team total, all five will receive recognition since Lamson and Kulbacki shot identical marks.
Senior Kyle Smith shot 584 smallbore and finished second behind Campriani. Zublasing’s 582 was good enough for a third-place tie with UAF’s Cody Rutter. Pentz and senior Brandi Eskew shot matching 580s and finished in fifth place.
Today’s victory is the Mountaineers’ third straight over the Nanooks and narrows UAF’s series advantage to 6-5.
WVU now breaks from action for a week before shooting at Great American Rifle Conference foe Kentucky on Feb. 5. The Mountaineers will meet Columbia State on Feb. 6, also in Lexington, Ky.
