MORGANTOWN, W. Va. – The sixth ranked West Virginia women’s basketball team rolled past Central Connecticut State University, 63-37, on Sunday afternoon at the WVU Coliseum.
At 14-0 the Mountaineers remain the last undefeated team in the BIG EAST and increase their consecutive winning streak at the Coliseum to 27 straight wins. They’ve also continued to hold all opponents this season to less than 60 points scoring.
Led by Brooke Hampton, Ayana Dunning and Liz Repella, who combined for 31 p;oints, the Mountaineers dominated the Blue Devils (7-5) during the second half of the game, outshooting them both from the field and from the free throw line. They also dominated in steals and rebounds, amassing 21 steals to CCSU’s 11 and pulling down 44 rebounds to CCSU’s 29.
“I thought the group that started the second half did a good job and moved the ball. It’s amazing when we moved the ball we went up 30 points real quick,” said coach Mike Carey.
In addition to her first career game leading the team in scoring, Hampton also had four steals and two assists in 19 minutes of play. Dunning was three rebounds shy of a double-double, pulling down seven boards to go with a career-high-tying 10 points in only 15 minutes of play, while Repella had six rebounds to go with her 10 points.
Senior guard Sarah Miles made her first start in eight games against the Blue Devils, making it look easy as she scored 7 points and took down four rebounds. Perhaps more impressive were her career-high and team-leading nine steals.
“Sarah (Miles) is a great player and it is my job to get her ready,” commented Carey. “She is used to driving it deep and on the break we’re trying to push it up and space out and she has to get used to it.”
The Mountaineers started the first half off strong, quickly building an 8-0 lead over the first three and a half minutes of play. Not long after that, however, the team once again lost its leading scorer as Madina Ali got into early foul trouble for the second game in a row, resulting in her having to leave the game. With Ali out, both the offense and defense fell out of rhythm, allowing Central Connecticut State to come back and reduce their deficit.
“I’m looking forward to getting off to a fast start,” explained Ayana Dunning. “The slow starts and ugly wins are better than a pretty loss, but it would be nice to get a good win. We need to pick it up. I sometimes think we overanalyze the game instead of just getting out there to play. When we think too much it causes us to have turnovers and take unnecessary shots instead of reversing the ball and letting it come to us naturally.”
West Virginia took a 23-20 lead into halftime, but CCSU went into the half with the better field goal percentage, shooting 39.1 percent (9-of-23). In contrast, the Mountaineers went into the locker room with a 27.3 percent (9-of-33) average from inside the arc. However, they racked up the better first half statistics in steals and rebounds, with 12 and 22, respectively.
As expected, Central Connecticut State was led by senior forward Kerrianne Dugan, who had 11 points and three rebounds against the Mountaineers. She was followed by sophomore center Kirsten Daamen, who put up 8 points and took down three rebounds.
West Virginia takes to the road on Wednesday for their second BIG EAST game of the season against Seton Hall. Tipoff is set for 12:30 p.m. in South Orange, N.J., with a live radio broadcast being offered on MSNsportsNET.com. Travis Jones will provide the call.
