VSR: Ali Student-Athlete of the Week

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Senior Madina Ali led the Mountaineers in bouncing back from the first loss of the season with her seventh double-double this season to be named the West Virginia University Student Athlete of the Week.
The Williamsport, Pa., native put up a career-high 32 points and pulled down 10 rebounds against Syracuse. The win extended West Virginia’s home court streak to 29 games. It was the first 30-point game of Ali’s career and the seventh time she led WVU in scoring this season. At forward, Ali was 10-for-19 from the field, shooting 52.6 percent, including a 3-pointer, two blocks, two steals and an assist against the Orange. She also shot 73.3 percent from the free throw line, allowing WVU another 13 points.
At Marquette, Ali put up numbers in double figures as she recorded 14 points off of 50 percent shooting (6-of-12). In addition she had five rebounds and a pair of assists against the Golden Eagles.
For the week, Ali averaged 23 points per game, the most of any WVU player by about 10 points. She shot 51.6 percent (16-of-31) from the field and averaged 7.5 rebounds a game, totaling 15 boards. She collected three assists, two blocks and two steals.

The West Virginia University track and field team returns to action this weekend as it plays host to the WVU State Farm Games at the WVU Shell Building on Saturday, Jan. 22.

The Mountaineers completed action at the Doug Raymond Invitational hosted by Kent State on Saturday with several top finishes … freshman Kaitlyn Gillespie led the way with a first place finish in the 1,000-meter race (2:54.16).

The ninth-ranked women’s basketball team will face in-state rival Marshall at the Charleston Civic Center, Wednesday, at 5:30 p.m. for the Chesapeake Energy Capital Classic. The Mountaineers will wrap up the week on Saturday with a 4 p.m. game against BIG EAST rival USF in the WVU Coliseum. Both games will be broadcast live on WVPBS. Saturday’s game is Alumni Day.
