MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Despite a 194.0 showing in its win over Michigan State on Jan. 14, the West Virginia gymnastics team slid five spots to No. 18 in today’s GymInfo Poll.
The Mountaineers (2-0) entered the poll last week at No. 13. Today’s rankings are based on season averages, with WVU boasting a 194.25 team average through only two meets.
The squad also is ranked No. 14 on beam (48.588), No. 22 on floor (48.7) and No. 23 on vault (48.625).
Freshman Hope Sloanhoffer, the current East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Specialist and Rookie of the Week, owns three national rankings. The Cornwall, N.Y., native is No. 6 on beam (9.85), No. 18 on vault (9.85) and is tied for No. 28 on floor with senior Amy Bieski (9.838).
Regionally, the Mountaineers moved to No. 4 overall and rank No. 3 on vault and beam, No. 5 on floor and No. 6 (48.338) on bars.
Sloanhoffer ranks in the top 10 regionally on two events, as she is No. 1 on beam and No. 5 on vault. Additionally, she and Bieski rank No. 11 on floor.
Bieski, a Nanticoke, Pa., native, also is ranked No. 12 in all-around (38.388), while sophomore Kaylyn Millick trails at No. 13 (38.225).
Junior Tina Maloney is the only other Mountaineer to boast two regional rankings. The Hanover, Ind., native ranks No. 18 on vault (9.75) and No. 25 on beam (9.7).
Three additional Mountaineers also are regionally ranked: sophomore Chelsea Goldschrafe on beam (No. 17, 9.75), junior Nicole Roach on bars (No. 25, 9.688) and senior Emily Kerwin on vault (No. 25, 9.688).
After one week at the top, WVU drops to No. 2 in the EAGL. NC State scored 195.15 in its season opener and assumed the No. 1 ranking. The Mountaineers also rank No. 2 on vault and beam, No. 3 on floor and No. 5 on bars.
Sloanhoffer boasts the team’s lone No. 1 league ranking, as her top regional beam mark holds true in the EAGL. She also is ranked No. 2 on vault and tied with Bieski for No. 6 on floor.
Bieski also ranks No. 10 in all-around.
Maloney and Goldschrafe round out the Mountaineers’ league rankings and are No. 8 and No. 10 on vault and beam, respectively.
The Mountaineers are back in action at 2 p.m. today, seeking their first series win against No. 5 Georgia, at Stegeman Coliseum, in Athens, Ga. The Gym Dogs were ranked No. 6 in last week’s national poll.
