MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – West Virginia senior Amy Bieski and freshman Hope Sloanhoffer swept the first East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) awards of the 2011 season, as Bieski was named the EAGL Gymnast of the Week and Sloanhoffer was awarded EAGL Specialist and Rookie of the Week honors.
The honors come on the heels of the No. 13 Mountaineers’ (1-0) come-from-behind 194.5-191.575 victory over then-No. 13 Missouri on Jan. 7, at the Cancun Classic, in Cancun, Mexico.
Bieski had a solid season debut, finishing first overall with a 39.025 score, her 16th career 39.0-plus mark. She paced the competition with wins on floor (9.85) and beam (9.85); the beam score matched a career-high the Nanticoke, Pa., native set in her last meet, the 2010 NCAA Southeast Regional Championships. She also finished sixth (9.775) on vault and scored 9.55 on bars.
The honor is Bieski’s seventh of her career. She earned the award a league-best four times in 2010.
Sloanhoffer was impressive in her WVU debut. In her first event, she stuck a near-perfect vault and finished first overall with a 9.925 score. The Cornwall, N.Y., native became the first WVU rookie to score at least 9.9 points in any event since 2009. She went on to score 9.85 on floor, tying for first place, and 9.825 on beam, good enough for a second-place tie.
The duo earned a pair of Top 10 national rankings yesterday, with Sloanhoffer ranked No. 1 on vault and Bieski ranked No. 6 on beam.
The Mountaineers open their 2011 home season against Michigan State on Jan. 14 in the inaugural “Beauty and the Beast” meet, at 7:30 p.m., at the WVU Coliseum. The WVU wrestling team, coming off an upset victory at No. 8 Illinois on Jan. 7, also will host the Spartans and compete simultaneously. Friday is a “Dollar Day,” with all tickets, hot dogs, popcorn and Coca-Colas available for just $1.
