MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - Senior Megan Mischler’s finish in front of the goal in the 85th minute gave the West Virginia women’s soccer team a 2-1 comeback victory over Central Michigan Saturday night at Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium.
With the match tied at 1-1, WVU midfielder Bri Rodriguez took the ball at the top of the box and fired a shot that nailed the crossbar, sending the ball down in front of the goal where Mischler came charging hard and one-timed the ball into the net for the game-winner.
“I’m so happy for Megan,” said coach Nikki Izzo-Brown. “She had a good week of practice and has been working really hard. It’s nice to see that effort rewarded in tonight’s game.”
The Mountaineers trailed for roughly 72 minutes before defender Bry McCarthy evened the score with a beautiful free kick in the 78th minute. Midfielder Caroline Szwed was fouled hard going up the right side by a Chippewa defender. McCarthy sent a ball inside the upper left corner from 25 yards out to knot the score at 1-1.
“I’ve been working on some kicks with (assistant coach Lisa) Stoia before practice,” said McCarthy of her first goal of the season. “I really just put my head down and drove it to where I’ve been practicing.”
Central Michigan took an early 1-0 lead in the fifth minute on a shot from midfielder Valerie Prause. Prause received a pass inside the box from forward Laura Twidle and finished a ball into the right corner of the goal.
“The ladies did a good job of making adjustments in the second half,” said Izzo-Brown. “Despite being down a goal, the character of this team came through in the end. We fought our way back and beat a very good Central Michigan team.”
The two teams combined for 37 shots (WVU 20, CMU 17), each with several harmless attempts, and 23 fouls (CMU 13, WVU 10) on the night.
“We knew it was going to be a tough battle tonight,” said McCarthy. “We heard going in how physical of a team they were. The plan was to win every 50-50 ball, keep our composure and play hard for 90 minutes.”
Forward Emily Dillon earned her first collegiate start tonight and nearly scored the game-tying goal in the 65th minute. The true freshman raced up the field with the ball in transition, sending a rising ball at the goal. The ball appeared to tuck under the crossbar, sending the ball down and out of the goal, reminiscent of Frank Lampard’s no-call for England against Germany in the recent World Cup.
Forward Blake Miller had West Virginia’s two best scoring chances of the first half, the first coming in the 16th minute on a blast from the left side that went just left of the post. With three minutes to play in the first half, Miller sent a hard liner from 22 yards at CMU goalkeeper Shay Mannino who came up with a save.
The Chippewas also found the crossbar, connecting on the top of the goal in the 30th minute. A Mountaineer foul outside the box on the left side set up a Prause kick that dinged hard off the crossbar.
Mischler attempted a game-best six shots while Prause led CMU with five shot attempts.
WVU goalkeeper Kerri Butler worked all 90 minutes between the posts to pick up her 34th career win. The senior made seven saves, including six in the second half.
The Mountaineers, 2-0 all-time against the Chippewas, improve to 2-2-0 on the season while Central Michigan dips to 3-2-0.
West Virginia returns to action with a two-match tournament in Miami, Fla., Sept. 10-12. WVU takes on Miami and Florida Atlantic in the Hurricane Cup.
